Second Century AD

The fish, originally a symbol of the early Christian Church was beginning in the second century to  be superseded by the Cross.  This was also the century of martyrs persecuted for their beliefs.

Here the fish takes the form of the cross and the bones of the martyrs have a skeletal appearance.  The sculpture is made of cherry wood and oak.
